The UK Tier 2 (General) visa is intended for skilled workers who have secured a job offer from a UK employer with a valid Tier 2 sponsorship license. This visa category allows professionals from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland to work in the UK in positions that cannot be filled by the local labor market. To qualify, applicants must have a Certificate of Sponsorship from their employer and meet the minimum salary threshold, typically starting at £30,000 per year or the standard rate for the specific job, whichever is higher. Applicants must also demonstrate proficiency in the English language and have sufficient funds to support themselves while in the UK.
Once approved, the Tier 2 (General) visa is typically valid for up to five years and 14 days, or for the duration specified on the Certificate of Sponsorship plus one month, whichever is shorter. Visa holders are allowed to bring their dependents, including a spouse and children, to the UK. This visa also offers a route to permanent residency, as holders can apply for indefinite leave to remain after five years of continuous residence, provided they meet the necessary eligibility criteria. The Tier 2 visa plays a key role in bringing skilled workers to the UK, supporting the country’s economic growth and helping to fill critical labor shortages.
